SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — Bones that could date back to the Civil War have been recovered in Shepherdstown.

The Herald-Mail of Hagerstown reports (http://bit.ly/1JoiouU ) the bones were recently found in the town, which was the site of an 1862 Civil War battle.

During the battle, 261 Confederate and 361 Union soldiers died.

Any bones found will be sent to the Smithsonian Institution, where they will be tested to determine if they are the remains of the soldiers who fought in the battle.

Shepherdstown resident Haley Press says he and others are working with the Sons of Confederate Veterans to provide a military burial for the bones and any other remains found.

Press says since the tests cannot determine the identity of the soldiers, both Union and Confederate flags will be flown during the service.
