The North Strabane Township police department is offering a bicycle safety fair for children in the Canon-McMillan School District from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Borland Manor Elementary School, 30 Giffin Drive.

The department received a grant from Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and Kohl’s and will have 84 helmets that will be given to children between the ages of 6 and 14 on a first-come, first-served basis. The helmets have been made available through the “Hard Heads” campaign aimed at teaching children the importance of wearing helmets correctly and at all times when riding anything on wheels.

Officer Eric Spicer said children can have their helmets checked for proper fit. Tandem LLC, a bike vendor on the Montour Trail, will also be on hand to inspect bikes for any safety issues.

There also will be an obstacle course for the children to try out their riding skills.

North Strabane firefighters will have their safety trailer at the event. There will be fire trucks and police cars for families to check out.

There will also be food vendors selling ice cream and hot foods.
