$1.3 million project continues
CALIFORNIA – Police officers in California Borough soon will be able to hold prisoners in a holding cell rather than handcuff them to a hook in the floor at the local police station.
The holding cell is part of a $1.3 million addition under construction at the California Borough building at 225 Third St., said borough Manager Samuel F. Sulkosky.
“The current space was very narrow, very small,” Sulkosky said.
TBI Contracting Inc. of McKeesport began construction March 16 on the L-shaped concrete block addition, which is being built to match the existing borough building.
The borough hopes to relocate seven full-time officers to their new quarters by October, Sulkosky said.
“The whole right-hand side will be new,” he said.
Portions of the existing police station will be used by zoning and administration. The police secretary and mayor also will have an office in the new addition.
Police officers will have a larger locker room and evidence room.
