The baseball field at Boyce-Mayview Park in Upper St. Clair will likely stay closed the rest of summer after coaches reported Friday it sunk. Upper St. Clair Township Manager Matt Serakowski said nearby mine subsidence caused a 60-square-yard area of the infield and outfield to drop about three feet.

“We’ve met with the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the Department of Environmental Protection, as well as with our township geotech personnel. We’ve been monitoring it and so far it’s been contained to just that ball field,” he said, noting the Miracle League field and other park infrastructure was not affected. He said after monitoring the site for another seven to 10 days, a plan to repair or raise the field will be discussed. In the meantime, Serakowski said ballclubs and the athletic association have been contacted and made aware of alternate sites.

“We’re coordinating now to set up games at Baker ball field and we have other sites that we can accommodate scheduled games,” he said, noting the field would likely stay closed the rest of the season.
