Canonsburg police are investigating an incident Wednesday night in the 100 block of West College Street in which at least five shots were fired but no one was injured.
Police Chief Al Coghill said police are not certain at this point as to whether the shooting, reported about 9:30 p.m., took place in the middle of the street or on a porch.
“When the officers arrived, there were several neighbors outside but the participants were gone,” Coghill said. “A cellphone was dropped at the scene and we were able to track one of the participants by determining ownership of that.”
Coghill said there were four to six participants. Police located five shell casings from a 9mm handgun but did not find anything that was struck by the gunfire. Police also found a broken BB gun.
“We have interviewed several people,” Coghill said. “We are trying to weed through their stories. Some are similar, some have discrepancies.”
“It appears the argument erupted over some conflict involving a girlfriend,” Coghill added.
Police canvassed the neighborhood.
Coghill said those believed to be involved live in the area but not on that street.
Coghill said a silver sport utility vehicle also was at the scene and may be involved.
Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Michael Ledger at 724-745-8020, extension 523.
