Control-line airplane enthusiast from around the world will be making their way to Carmichaels for the 19th Brodak Fly-In competition Monday to Saturday, June 19.

More than 400 flyers and guests are expected to attend, with more than 800 competitive flights scheduled.

The competition started small as an event where people who build and fly control-line model airplanes could compete against one another, swap ideas and get to know one another better. At the first competition, the event only lasted three days and only 30 people were a part of it. This year, the competition plans to have hundreds of people from places like Canada and South Korea and will last a total of six days.

Brodak Manufacturing owner, John Brodak, hosts the competition at his house in Carmichaels. He believes this event has become more than just a social gathering.

“We think that this is a case where everyone wins. The builders and fliers have a great time, they spend money in the local communities and Carmichaels gets national attention through the advertising for the event,” Brodak said.

This year’s event plans on hosting a number of different categories of competition for the fliers and guests to enjoy.

The competitions range in skill level from basic, to intermediate, to advanced to expert.

Some of the featuring competitions are old time stunt/ots phase 2, profile precision aerobatics, ladies and youth only basic flight, sportsman carrier, junkyard wars and speed limit combat.

“Combat is the most exciting one to watch,” Cheryl Martin, a worker at Brodak Manufacturing, said.

Over the years more than 2,200 pilots have made over 10,000 since the first control-lined airplane lifted off the competition.

This year, the event will include a craftsmanship award for the most admired stunt airplane.

The six day competition is open to the community at no charge. The events begin each day at 7:45 p.m. and end when the competition results are in.

The fly-in will take place at John Brodak’s home, 228 Locust Street, Carmichaels, PA 15320.
