Four hurt in I-79 crash in Amwell
Traffic was snarled on Interstate 79 north Friday afternoon following a crash in a work zone in Amwell Township that involved five vehicles and left four people injured.
The severity of the injuries was unknown. The four were transported to Washington Hospital by ambulance.
State police reported the accident occurred about 1:45 p.m. near the Marianna exit, about a half-mile south of Hatfield Road. According to police, a vehicle driven by Mackenzie M. McClay, 25, of Washington, was entering a work zone and approached traffic stopped in the right lane. Her vehicle struck the trailer of the vehicle ahead, then went onto the shoulder of the roadway where it struck another. Police said the McClay’s vehicle then returned to the right lane of the interstate and struck a third vehicle, pushing it into the one ahead.
Police said McClay was not injured and neither was the driver or passenger of the first vehicle struck: Roxanne L. Nuzum, 49, and Lewis A. Nuzum, 69, both of Terra Alta, W.Va. The driver of the final vehicle – Charles R. King III, 23, of Prosperity – also was not reported injured.
Police listed the four injured as Jerry P. Nelson, 50, and his passenger, Abigail Nelson, 14, of Jefferson, and James W. Douglas, 64, of Sutton, W.Va., and his passenger, Phylis A. Veith, 59 of Bridgeport, W.Va.
McClay will be cited with following too closely.
