Waynesburg police are warning of a telephone scam from people claiming to be with the IRS threatening to sue or garnish wages from area residents.

Borough Chief Rob Toth said his department has received four reports in the past week from people who said they received a call from someone posing as the IRS and asking for them to send money because of “mistakes” on their taxes.

The agency will typically send certified letters or make personal visits if there is a tax issue, Toth said.

He warned people to never send or wire money if they receive such a phone call.
