Both the Greene County and Jacktown fairs will be hosting multiple competitions to showcase local bakers and their talents.
The baking contests are apple pie, angel food cake and an assortment of chocolate baked goods such as cookies and bars.
These are all preliminary competitions that lead to the selection of the final winners each January at the Pennsylvania Farm Show in Harrisburg.
Winners will receive a cash prize at the fair competitions and a prize of $500 at the farm show.
The 12th Angel Food Cake contest has rules that all entries must be made from scratch and with eggs produced from Pennsylvania. The entries must include a copy of the recipe used as well.
The PA Preferred Chocolate Baking contests was created to support local businesses to not only directly support the state’s economy, but also to encourage Pennsylvania businesses to continue to grow and create products that guarantee consumers fresh, quality food.
The apple pie baking contest is co-sponsored by Pennsylvania Apple Marketing Program, Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture and Pennsylvania State Association of County Fairs.
For Greene County Fair, all three competitions will be held Aug. 9 with entries due that day between 10 and 4 p.m. Applications must be submitted by June 30. Applications can be found at www.greenecountyfair.org, or contact Jeanette Trader at 724-627-5161 for more information.
The Jacktown Fair does not require pre-registration for their competitions. The competitions will be held July 14 with entries due July 13 between 9 and 6 p.m. For more information, call Melody Burns at 724-428-3617.
