Art park starting to take shape
A vacant lot behind The George Washington hotel in Washington is beginning to look more and more like an art park every day.
A gazebo was installed along a concrete wall, complementing the three benches already located in the lot. A soft opening for the park is scheduled July 9 for the start of the Whiskey Rebellion Festival.
The project is a collaborative effort among the property owners, city officials, WashArts and local students. WashArts received a $175,000 grant from the Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation to improve public spaces.
In the coming weeks, the gazebo and ground will be stained a new color. Bird baths and additional benches will be added to the park, and planters will be installed.
Later, a mural and additional artwork will be brought into the park.
