Washington officials are addressing two sinkholes and a collapsed storm drain to determine the cause of the issues.

Widmer Engineering Inc. is completing a study of the collapsed storm drain on East Alley in the Tylerdale area. Councilman Ken Westcott, who oversees the street department, said the study should be completed within a couple weeks.

He said the hole is cordoned off, and he does not believe it poses any danger to drivers.

“We feel pretty confident that, at this point, it’s not going to collapse,” he said.

The study will determine whether the pipelines beneath the storm drain are active. After that, city officials can decide whether the line can be abandoned or if new pipes are needed.

The issue was first reported about four or five weeks ago. The city also is investigating two sinkholes, both of which are on private property on Idaho Street and near the intersection of McKinley Avenue and Clark Street.

Westcott said it has not been determined if those repairs will be the responsibility of the city or the property owners.
