BETHLEHEM, Pa. (AP) — Authorities say a 300- to 400-pound black bear surprised a group of students holding an early morning party near an eastern Pennsylvania university campus.

Emergency officials in Northampton County received a flood of 911 calls shortly after 2 a.m. Saturday after the animal was seen in south Bethlehem near Lehigh University.

Police chief Mark DiLuzio said the bear “lumbered close to the party and scared the living daylights out of people.”

Lehigh University said on its website that the bear was captured, tranquilized and removed from the area at about 4:30 a.m. Saturday.

DiLuzio said it was the same bear seen Friday near the university’s athletic facilities are located.

Pennsylvania Game Commission district officer Tyler Krieder said the bear came from New Jersey and probably swam across the Delaware River.
