After leaving a bar Friday night, a Washington man went off-roading to take a shortcut home, police say.

Jude Cassidy, 52, of 40 Mark Ave., Washington, is accused of driving under the influence of alcohol and getting his vehicle stuck on the railroad tracks off East Railroad Street. Police said his blood-alcohol content was 0.221 percent, which is nearly triple the legal limit. DUI charges against him are pending.

Police said Cassidy, who was found outside his car on the railroad tracks at 11:15 p.m., admitted to being intoxicated and said he “wanted to drive home on the railroad tracks to get away” after drinking at a bar on South Main Street, according to the police report.

“I don’t believe he could get to Mark Avenue from the railroad tracks,” said police Chief Chris Luppino.

Police said Cassidy was swaying badly, smelled of alcohol and was mumbling and rambling. He reportedly refused to take a sobriety test at the scene but agreed to take a breath test at the police station. Police took him home after he was released.
