PHILADELPHIA (AP) – Philadelphia officials say an officer was killed in the line of duty after being shot in the head while trying to stop a robbery at a video game store.

Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter said Officer Robert Wilson III was killed Thursday. Nutter says Wilson was an eight-year veteran.

Police say two suspects are in custody, and that one was wounded after the late afternoon confrontation inside a GameStop store at a North Philadelphia strip mall.

Police Chief Charles Ramsey says the entire department is in shock and mourning.

Ramsey says Wilson and his partner were inside the store when the two suspects tried to rob it. He says they exchanged gunfire and Wilson fired back as he was being shot at by both suspects. He says Wilson’s partner also discharged his weapon.
