PHILADELPHIA (AP) – Jurors resume deliberations today in the case of a man charged with attempted murder in a shooting that injured a Philadelphia police officer.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reported jurors deliberated for about six hours since Friday on the charges against 33-year-old Eric Torres.

Torres is also charged with aggravated assault in the August 2013 shooting that followed a traffic stop in north Philadelphia.

Police said a 41-year-old officer was shot as he struggled with the suspect and suffered kidney damage and a severed artery.

Defense attorneys call the shooting an accident that occurred during a struggle with several officers.

They also argue that their client was face down with his hands under him and could not have pulled the trigger or aimed at anyone.
