The mayor of Charleroi submitted his letter of resignation Thursday, effective March 31, stating his “proactive style was not welcomed” in the borough.

However, borough council voted 4-2 to not accept the resignation of John Mollenauer, who was serving the second year of his first term in office, borough manager Donn Henderson said.

Mollenauer, who could not be reached Friday, said during his campaign that Charleroi needed new leadership because the borough had been going downhill for the past decade.

“After months of encouragement from many loyal friends, residents and merchants, I yielded to public opinion and decided to run for mayor of my hometown,” Mollenauer stated in his letter of resignation that was delivered to a council meeting by council President Paul Pivovarnik.

“I had hopes and aspirations, but my principles and ideals were thwarted,” he stated in the letter. “I wanted to do something, not be someone!”

Mollenauer did not elaborate in the letter as to why he no longer felt welcome in office.

Henderson said council would have 30 days to appoint a new mayor, and that the Democratic and Republican committees would select candidates for the office to appear on the November ballot.
