NY state trooper collapses, dies after basic-training run

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — A 23-year-old state trooper collapsed during a basic-training run and died Friday, three days after taking his service oath, police said.
Trooper Donald R. Fredenburg, of Utica, grabbed his side and collapsed at around 6:30 a.m., roughly a quarter-mile into a daily physical training run at the University at Albany campus. Fredenburg was in his second week of training at the adjacent New York State Police Academy.
Academy staffers and fellow runners tended to him immediately, and responders were able to restart his heart with an automated external defibrillator, but he died about an hour later at a hospital.
State Police Superintendent Joseph D’Amico said at a news conference Friday afternoon that Fredenburg had no known medical issues.
“This was only his third run with us,” said D’Amico, who swore Fredenburg into service Tuesday.
Fredenburg served as a U.S. Marine from 2009 until 2013.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo directed flags on all state government buildings to be flown at half-staff Monday.
“Trooper Fredenburg put his life on the line for his fellow New Yorkers as a U.S. Marine, and was prepared to do the same during his training as a New York State Trooper,” Cuomo said in a statement. “He represented the ideal of service to another that defines the State Police so well.”
Fredenburg is survived by his wife, Angela, and his parents. Funeral arrangements are pending.
