PITTSBURGH (AP) – A western Pennsylvania man awaiting trial in one 2013 slaying has been ordered to stand trial in a second shooting death in which his attorney says he acted in self-defense.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported 20-year-old Ashanti Montgomery is charged in Allegheny County in the death of 37-year-old Lou Auer in the courtyard of an East Liberty apartment complex in January 2013.

Police said Montgomery told them he intervened in a fight between some friends.

Defense attorney Owen Seman argued Friday that the case was self-defense and questioned the timing of the charges. Prosecutors said they were filed after additional information came to light about the defendant’s statements.

Montgomery is scheduled for trial next month in the slaying of 16-year-old Deondre Pace three days before Auer was killed.
