GREENSBURG (AP) – A judge has ordered a mental evaluation of a man accused of having shot a man to death in his friend’s driveway a year and a half ago.

Fifty-six-year-old Lee Atwood of Irwin is charged in Westmoreland County in the August 2013 slaying of 46-year-old George Williams in South Huntingdon Township.

The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports defense attorney Patricia Elliot says her client was pistol-whipped before the shooting, so a head injury might have rendered her client unable to form any intent to kill.

Judge Rita Hathaway on Friday ordered Atwood to be examined to determine whether he is competent to stand trial.

Atwood is also facing charges he tried to hire a hit man to kill a witness in the case.
