Details of exemptions to end under Wolf’s sales tax plan

Here are details of some of the 45 categories of products or services that are currently exempt from the Pennsylvania sales tax, but would be subject to the tax under Gov. Tom Wolf’s state budget plan. In addition to paring down sales-tax exemptions, Wolf wants to increase the tax rate from the current 6 percent to 6.6 percent. Some of the targeted exemptions are listed with the amount of revenue that the Wolf administration estimates would be raised in the state government’s fiscal year beginning July 1, 2016.

• Cable television programming: $260 million.

• Amusement parks, fitness, centers, recreational sports centers and recreational sports, including skiing and golf course fees: $259 million.

• Social assistance, including child care services, community food and housing, emergency relief and vocational rehabilitation: $200 million.

• Real estate agents and brokers: $195.1 million.

• Hair, nail, and skin care services: $157 million.

• Nursing, community and residential care services: $152 million.

• Over-the-counter drugs and vitamins: $152 million.

• Personal services, including pet care, photofinishing, parking, personal trainers, wedding planning, house sitting and dating services: $133 million.

• Non-tuition higher education charges for meal plans and fees: $121 million.

• Local hauling of waste and recycling: $111 million.

• Candy and gum: $108 million.

• Movie theater tickets and postproduction services: $96 million.

• Spectator sports events: $89 million.

• For-profit performing arts events: $80 million.

• Professional services, including research, consulting, photography, translation, veterinary, scientific, computer and technical services: $70 million.

• Home health care, including skilled nursing and counseling: $63 million.
