Clinton Lee Hanlan, 20, of 1411 S. Eighty Eight Road, Greensboro, was charged Monday with receiving stolen property after police said they determined the engine in his car had come from a stolen vehicle.

Charges were filed with District Judge Lee Watson by state police Trooper Jason Clayton, who was assisted in the investigation by Cumberland Township Patrolman Bryan Smith.

State police said they recovered a 2006 Mazda 6 Oct. 7 at a gas well site on Water Tank Road in Dunkard Township. The car had been stripped of its engine, transmission and three wheels and burned, police said.

The car, owned by Chelsey Stockdale of Route 21 Mobile Home Park, Carmichaels, had been reported stolen Oct. 4 to Cumberland Township police.

According to the criminal complaint, Smith was talking to Hanlan on Nov. 9 about another matter when he noticed Hanlan owned a Mazda 6 about the same year as the one reported stolen. Hanlan told Smith he had just had the engine repaired at a repair shop in Mt. Morris, the complaint said.

Smith checked with the shop and was informed it had no record of performing engine work on Hanlan’s car. Smith obtained a search warrant and checked the engine number of Hanlan’s Mazda. The number indicated the engine had come from Stockdale’s car, police said.

Hanlan had not yet been arraigned on the charges Wednesday.
