State Rep. Brandon Neuman was appointed Wednesday to a legislative commission that aims to establish fair and uniform sentencing polices for those found guilty of crimes.

Neuman, D-North Strabane Township, will join 10 other members on the Pennsylvania Commission on Sentencing. He was appointed by Rep. Mike Turzai, R-Allegheny County, who is speaker of the state House of Representatives.

“I’m looking forward to administering fair and sound sentencing policies as the House Democratic Caucus’ representative on the panel,” Neuman said in a news release.

Neuman, who holds a law degree from Duquesne University, serves on the House Judiciary Committee and said he has worked to strengthen and reform child and youth laws.

Neuman said the commission also oversees state and county parole guidelines, as well as resentencing policies. It was established by the General Assembly in 1978 and was designated a legislative service agency in 1986, according to the commission’s website. Guidelines were established to provide judges with a “common reference point for sentencing similar offenders convicted of similar crimes,” it stated.
