WAYNESBURG – Greene County commissioners Thursday hired a contractor to repair the roofs on several buildings at the county fairgrounds and awarded eight “mini-grants” to municipalities and nonprofit groups for improvements to community recreational facilities.

The commissioners awarded a contract to repair roofs on five buildings at the fairgrounds to TRS Roofing, which submitted the lowest responsible bid of $342,000.

The roofs will be repaired on the maintenance building, recreation office, cattle barn and two horse barns, said Jeff Marshall, county chief clerk.

No work was done on the roofs in years, he said.

The project will be funded by the county’s Act 13 natural gas impact fee money.

The commissioners also awarded mini-grants to eight groups.

The grant program is funded by the county and offers maximum grants of $3,000. The grants are normally used for park improvements, including construction of baseball dugouts or the restoration of ball fields or park fences.

Those receiving grants are the Izaak Walton League for trout stocking in Ten Mile Creek; Morgan Township and JAGS Softball for improvement to Burson Field; Greensboro Borough, Monongahela Township and Greensboro Youth Baseball for baseball field improvements; Cumberland Township Parks and Recreation for replacing the fence at Legion Field and installing a climbing wall and field improvements at the little league field; Waynesburg Borough for replacing the fence at Meadowlark Park ball field; Jefferson Township and Greene Valley Youth Baseball for ball field improvements; Dunkard Valley Girls Youth Softball Association for ball field improvements; and Center Township for purchasing new bleachers at the ball field and for repairing a walking bridge at the township park.

All of the grants were for $3,000 except for the grant to Greensboro Borough, Monongahela Township and Greensboro Youth Baseball, which had requested $1,500.

The commissioner approved a contract with Altered Gas Performance Events LLC, which organizes the Flashlight Drags at the county airport. Five events will be held this year.

The commissioners approved a $245,000 damage settlement with Buccaneer Enterprises Inc. of Buckhannon, W.Va. A company driver damaged a section of the Pollocks Mill Bridge on Sept. 28 when he attempted to drive a water tanker truck across it.

The commissioners also agreed to allocate $15,000 to the Greene County Industrial Development Authority to hire Langan Engineering and Environmental Services to conduct an environmental assessment of the Mather coal refuse site.

The commissioners, in addition, approved a proposal from Widmer Engineering for the engineering design for the replacement of county bridge No. 98. The bridge is off Route 21 in Graysville and provides access to the fire hall, a church and a coin laundry. Widmer’s fee is $137,955.12 and will be paid with Act 13 money.
