Local chapter of DAR recognizes good citizens
The John Corbly Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution held a recognition banquet March 14 at the Hartley Inn in Carmichaels to recognize the winners of the DAR Good Citizens Awards.
The high school seniors were chosen by their schools for their dependability, community service, leadership and patriotism. Regent Shelvajean Baysinger and Chairwoman Charlene Shuckhart presented each student with a certificate, wallet card and pin.
The following students received awards:
• Tieler Gammage is a student at West Greene High School and is a daughter of Carol and Christopher Young of Holbrook.
She is a member of the marching band, concert band, county band, art club and Upward Bound.
• Erin Kline is a student at Jefferson-Morgan High School and is a daughter of Bradley and Janette Kline of Rices Landing.
She is a member of the National Honor Society, Leo Club, Interact Club, drama club, envirothon and is vice president of student council. Kline was awarded the Brooks-Crago American Legion Good Citizen Award.
• Stephanie Mitchell is a student at Carmichaels Area High School and is a daughter of James and Rebecca Mitchell of Carmichaels. She is captain of the varsity cheerleaders and is a member of the senior high chorus, senior standing committee, SADD, National Honor Society, ski club and student council.
Mitchell was selected girl of the month by the Women’s Civic Club and is a Big Sister in the Big Brothers and Big Sisters program.
She also was chosen by the Pennsylvania State Society of the DAR as an honorable mention winner for the Good Citizen Contest.
• Curtis Patton is a student at Waynesburg Central High School and a son of Tom Patton of Spraggs. He is treasurer of the National Honor Society and a member of the Future Farmers of America, ski club, principal’s council and the marching, concert and jazz bands and brass ensemble.
He received the Joe Ayersman American History Award and was chosen a Lions Club boy of the month.
• Abigail Shipley is a student at Mapletown High School and is a daughter of Kenneth and Holly Shipley of Greensboro. She is captain of the girls volleyball team and a member of the basketball and softball teams, ski club, Future is Mine Club, envirothon, academic league, Quarterbacks of Life and interact club.
Shipley also is vice president of the National Honor Society, treasurer of the student council and president of SADD. She received the U.S. Marine Corps scholar/athlete award, U.S. Army scholar/athlete award, Herald-Standard outstanding scholar/athlete award and the Presidential Award for Education.
