State Sen. Matt Smith was appointed Tuesday to serve on the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency for the next two years.

The Senate Democratic Caucus selected Smith, D-Mt. Lebanon, to serve as its representative for the panel tasked to enhance public safety and improve victim services.

“Throughout my tenure in public service I have proactively reached out to police chiefs and district justices within my district to hear directly how policy decisions at the state level impact our communities and I intend to expand my outreach in this new role,” Smith said. “We must focus on our efforts to enhance safety for children and other vulnerable populations.”

The commission was created in 1978 and is supported state and federal grant money to improve safety in Pennsylvania’s communities.

Smith’s legislative district covers numerous South Hills communities, including Peters Township.
