WAYNESBURG – Motorists who regularly travel Route 21 between Waynesburg and Carmichaels might want to take heed, a project to resurface about 2.6 miles of the road is set to begin next week.

Golden Eagle Construction Co. was awarded a $1.3 million contract from the state Department of Transportation to mill and resurface the highway between Rolling Meadows Road in Franklin Township and Gwynn Road in Jefferson Township.

In addition to the road work, the company will be repairing and replacing some of the guardrails along that section of road, PennDOT spokeswoman Valerie Petersen said.

The project is scheduled to be completed at the end of May.

The work is expected to require single-lane restrictions, with flaggers and alternating traffic, at times, Petersen said. “Motorists should expect some restrictions and delays,” she said.

PennDOT has been resurfacing sections of Route 21 for the last few years between Waynesburg and the Masontown Bridge. “We do have a plan, as with all major transportation corridors, to keep the roads updated,” Petersen said.

People who have been driving the route for years will probably know what to expect.

In the spring two years ago, PennDOT completed the resurfacing of about a 2-mile section of the road between Gwynn Road and Fox Road in Cumberland Township.

In 2012, a slightly longer section of the road was repaved between the Baileys Crossroads and the Paisley Intersection.
