MarkWest Liberty Midstream & Resources, LLC submitted its final report to the state Department of Environmental Protection regarding the company’s efforts to remediate contaminated soil and water at its Dryer Compressor Station site in Avella.

The DEP will review MarkWest’s report to determine if the remediated property at 819 Scenic Drive complies with statewide health standards. The property should be “cleaned up to a standard that would allow for residential use in the future,” DEP spokesman John Poister said in an email.

MarkWest was responsible for condensate that spilled from a tank in late 2009, Poister said. The company removed contaminated groundwater and about 150 square feet of impacted soil. Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes were detected in both the soil and groundwater, Poister said.

MarkWest spokesman Robert McHale said the company “discovered and self-reported a small release of liquid hydrocarbon at our Dryer compressor station” in Avella.

“Through the filing of this notice, MarkWest has demonstrated that we have successfully remediated the site in accordance with the Pennsylvania Land Recycling and Remediation Standards Act (Act-2),” he said.

The remediation filings are required in accordance with the DEP’s land recycling program, which encourages voluntary clean-up and reuse of contaminated sites.
