Union fights letting disabled student use faculty restroom

MUNHALL (AP) – A school board plans to vote on continuing to let a special needs student use a faculty restroom despite a union grievance filed by teachers at a Pittsburgh-area elementary school.
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported the Steel Valley School Board will vote on the issue Thursday night.
The Steel Valley Education Association filed the grievance last month. A petition from 18 female teachers accompanied the grievance, which says letting the boy use the restroom violates the teachers’ contract.
District officials say the boy is being allowed to use the restroom on the lower level of Park Elementary School because it is difficult for him to climb steps to a students’ restroom on another floor.
But the union said the contract requires the district to provide “lavatory facilities exclusively for employees.”
