Two West Virginia residents were arrested Monday night on drug charges after Canonsburg police found them with stamp bags of suspected heroin during a traffic stop.

Summer Dawn Fury, 33, of Buckhannon, and Christopher N. Gabriel, 38, of Clarksburg, were stopped by police after Fury pulled from a parking lot in the 500 block of West Pike Street and drove a short distance without turning on the headlights of her minivan.

As Sgt. James Spingola approached the driver, Officer James Eckels went to the passenger side. Fury could give Spingola only her driver’s license and an expired insurance card.

While waiting for Fury’s information to be checked, Eckels saw her put something behind the passenger seat of the minivan. When she saw Eckels watching her, she grabbed some napkins from the glove box, rolled them in a ball and put them back in the glove box as Gabriel appeared to lift his leg in apparent attempt to hide what she was putting in the glove box, police said.

Eckels directed Fury to get out of the vehicle and asked her if there was something in the vehicle. She told Eckels if there was anything it would be in the glove box. Gabriel told police that anything in the vehicle was not his. He told Eckels the two were selling meat at a nearby VFW post.

Police found several bags of suspected heroin, numerous empty stamp bags and syringes in different parts of the vehicle. Police also found a stun gun that looked like a pack of cigarettes in Fury’s purse. She told police she carried it for personal protection and did not know it was a prohibited weapon.

Both were arraigned before District Judge Jay Weller. Gabriel, who is charged with possession of heroin and paraphernalia, was placed in Washington County jail on $20,000 bond. Fury, who is charged with possession of heroin, paraphernalia and having a prohibited offensive weapon, was placed in jail on $10,000 bond. They are scheduled to have a preliminary hearing before District Judge David Mark April 8.
