DAYTON, Ohio (AP) — Ohio native Martin Sheen will be among more than 1,900 people receiving diplomas this weekend at the University of Dayton.
Sheen grew up near the school, but wanted to pursue his acting career instead of a degree. The school will give him an honorary doctor of humane letters degree Sunday for his commitment to peace, social justice and human rights.
Born Ramon (RAH’-mohn) Estevez (ES’-tay-vez), Sheen attended Chaminade (SHAH’-min-nahd) High School and has said the Marianist teachings he was exposed to helped shape his beliefs.
He will take part in Sunday morning’s commencement at the UD Arena. There are ceremonies Saturday for graduate and law school degrees.
Sheen’s many acclaimed roles include playing a president on television’s “The West Wing” and starring in movies such as “Badlands” and “Apocalypse Now.”
