Teen killed in Monongahela crash
An 18-year-old was killed early Tuesday when his car crashed into a building in the 700 block of East Main Street in Monongahela.
Robert Kovalcik was pronounced dead at Monongahela Valley Hospital after being freed from the wreckage of his car by Monongahela firefighters and Tri-Community Ambulance personnel. Kovalcik crashed into a wall at Wall Firma, Inc., 733 E. Main St. Kovalcik was unresponsive when emergency crews arrived.
Monongahela police Chief Brian Tempest said Kovalcik’s license indicated he lived at 1143 Surreywood Drive, Bethel Park, but police learned he may have been staying at a home in the 800 block of East Main.
A driver traveling in the opposite direction told police as he approached Kovalcik’s vehicle, it appeared Kovalcik was staring to lose control of his vehicle, Tempest said. After the other driver passed Kovalcik’s eastbound vehicle, it crashed into the wall.
Tempest said the road was damp and there was a light rain at the time of the crash, which occurred at 1:36 a.m.
Washington County Coroner Tim Warco said the cause of death was blunt force trauma of the head and trunk.
Tempest said the investigation is continuing, Carroll Township police assisted at the scene. Kovalcik’s death is the eighth on Washington County roads this year.
