MCKEESPORT – The Allegheny County medical examiner released the name of a man found dead in the street near a Western Pennsylvania hospital as police continued to search for the motorist they believe struck and killed him.

The dead man is 35-year-old Jeffrey Carter, of Duquesne.

He was found in the street near UPMC-McKeesport hospital about 3:50 a.m. Tuesday.

County police said witnesses reported a loud noise they believed might have been a gunshot, but which police believe was the sound of Carter being struck by the vehicle.

An autopsy shows Carter died from trauma injuries consistent with being hit by a vehicle.

Police haven’t said whether Carter was near the hospital for any particular reason.
