Washington bank robbed
Washington police said a man walked into the Tylerdale branch of Washington Financial, handed a teller a note demanding money and walked out with cash Friday afternoon.
The culprit fled from the bank at 98 E. Wylie Ave. after the robbery about 1:45 p.m., possibly in a red vehicle that traveled onto East Wylie before turning south on Allison Avenue toward Tyler Avenue.
There were several customers in the bank when it was robbed, said Lt. Dan Stanek.
“He just walked in, went up to the counter and handed the teller a note,” Stanek said Friday afternoon. “The surrounding tellers didn’t even realize what was going on.”
“We are hoping someone might have seen him around the bank,” he added. “Chances are people who might have seen him probably did not know what happened.”
No weapon was seen. The robber is described as a clean-shaven white man in his 20s with lighter hair wearing a Monster black ballcap, blue jeans and black hooded sweatshirt. Stanek said the robber was about 6 feet tall and had an average build.
Washington checked surveillance cameras of businesses in the area, which revealed an image of the man, as well as his vehicle. Detectives also were checking bank surveillance footage.
The bank, formerly known as Washington Federal Savings, was robbed three times in a nine-month span between September 2006 and May 2007. In the Feb. 6, 2007, hold-up a Washington man was shot in the leg when he confronted the robber as he left the bank.
Stanek asked anyone with information to call him at 724-223-1386 or call 911.
