NICOSIA, Cyprus (AP) — Relations between Cyprus’ attorney general and his deputy have hit a new low after they both asked the Supreme Court to get the other fired for “inappropriate behavior.”
In separate statements Wednesday, Attorney General Costas Clerides and his deputy Rikkos Erotokritou also asked for each other’s suspension until the Supreme Court renders its decision. Clerides and Erotokritou said that each other’s handling of criminal and civil cases “suggest a conflict of interest.”
Last month, Clerides ordered a criminal probe against Erotokritou after an independent investigator concluded that he may be implicated in a bribery case involving a powerful Cypriot law firm.
Erotokritou has denied any wrongdoing and has accused Clerides of being implicated in the same bribery case.
