Police shoot man apparently wielding hammer in New York City

NEW YORK (AP) — Authorities say a man apparently wielding a hammer has been shot by police in New York City.

Police say the man was struck more than once. His condition was not immediately known.

The shooting took place shortly after 10 a.m. Wednesday blocks from Madison Square Garden and Penn Station in midtown Manhattan.

Authorities say it’s possible the man was the same person who attacked at least two people with a hammer this week.

Police say preliminary information shows officers tried to approach the man, and he took out what appeared to be a hammer and lunged at officers. The officers then fired.

Throngs of onlookers gathered as police set up a crime scene.

The investigation is ongoing.
