WAYNESBURG – Greene County election officials are expecting turnout for today’s primary to be similar to recent off-year elections.

“There might be a little more interest because of the judges and the commissioners race,” Greene County Elections Director Tina Kiger said.

The polls open at 7 a.m. and close at 8 p.m.

Kiger expected turnout to hover around 40 percent, which would be similar to the 2011 election in which the county Board of Commissioner races were on the ballot. However, she noted absentee ballots, which were accepted by the elections office until Friday night, are down this year, which could predict a lower turnout.

The biggest race facing Greene County voters will be to choose Democratic and Republican nominees for Court of Common Pleas judge.

The three candidates, Louis Dayich, Jeffry Grimes and David Russo, all cross-filed, meaning if one wins the nomination for both parties, that man is nearly assured to be elected the next county judge during the general election in November. The seat became open when former President Judge William Nalitz retired from in December.

A contested race for county commissioner will appear only on the Democratic ballot. Three candidates, incumbents Chuck Morris and Blair Zimmerman, and former county commissioner Dave Coder, are seeking the two nominations.

Two candidates, incumbent Archie Trader and newcomer Keith McClure, also filed petitions for the Republican nominations. Their entry into the fall’s general election is likely barring a write-in candidate wins.

All incumbent Democratic county row officers will not face opposition in the primary election. Because no Republican candidates filed for their offices, the candidates are unlikely to see opposition in the fall.

Meanwhile, there will be no polling changes for any of Greene County’s 44 precincts this primary, Kiger said. However, she noted that voters in the Dunkard Lower precinct will continue to go to Dana/Coresco Training Center at 322 Meadows Run Road in Mt. Morris after moving the voting machines there beginning in 2014.
