BUNOLA (AP) – Police in Western Pennsylvania have shot a man they say killed one person and fired at officers during a standoff.

Authorities say it happened Wednesday afternoon in Forward. Police say they responded to a reported assault at a home and came under fire from 47-year-old Billy Joe Richter when they arrived. Allegheny County police say officers returned fire.

Police say Richter fired at officers for hours.

Richter was taken into custody at about 5:15 p.m. He was suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest and is in critical condition. Authorities say ballistic testing will determine which officer shot Richter.

Police say Richter fatally shot the 61-year-old homeowner before police arrived. Richter will be charged with homicide, criminal mischief and related offenses.

It’s unclear if he has an attorney.
