MCKEESPORT (AP) – Police believe a 73-year-old man who crashed his vehicle and later died after being shot in the head is an innocent victim caught in the crossfire between two cars at a crime-ridden western Pennsylvania housing project.

The victim, James Ponzo, of Glassport, died of the gunshot which was discovered when his vehicle crashed into another just before 3 p.m. Wednesday in McKeesport. Two people in the other vehicle, also innocent bystanders, suffered only minor injuries.

Allegheny County police say they’re looking for one or two vehicles believed to be involved in trading gunfire at the Crawford Village housing complex shortly before Ponzo crashed.

Lt. Andrew Schurman says police think Ponzo “was an innocent victim and he was just driving by the area when the shooting occurred.”

There were no immediate arrests.
