ELLWOOD CITY (AP) — Fire crews are battling a blaze at a battery and hazardous waste recycling plant in western Pennsylvania.

Lawrence County emergency officials say the fire at the Inmetco plant in Ellwood City, about 35 miles northwest of Pittsburgh, was reported at about 9 a.m. Sunday.

No injuries have been reported from the fire, which was sending a heavy plume of smoke billowing into the sky.

Inmetco, a subsidiary of Horsehead Holdings Corp., says it recycles “thousands of tons of nickel, chromium, iron, molybdenum and cadmium bearing wastes” each year. The company says it is the only North America facility offering thermal recovery for nickel-cadmium batteries.
