A Fayette County man was arrested by state police Sunday, two days after a crash on Route 40 in Centerville in which he and three other people were injured.

Kenneth W. Poindexter, 22, of 1202 Hunters Ridge, Brownsville, is accused of turning from Malden Road into the path of a vehicle traveling west on Route 40, striking the front of it with the driver’s side of his vehicle. His vehicle then traveled across Route 40, where it hit another vehicle, police said.

Shirley Carey, 80, of Fredericktown, the driver of the vehicle first struck by Poindexter, told state police that Poindexter’s car had pulled out in front of her.

Carey was taken to UPMC-Presbyterian hospital in Pittsburgh, where she underwent five hours of surgery to repair a broken right leg and broken right arm.

Two teenage boys who were passengers in his car were treated at Uniontown Hospital, police said.

Poindexter was flown to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh for his injuries. He reportedly told emergency medical personnel and staff at AGH that his name was Kevin Thomas. After his release from the hospital, police said they learned his name and where he was living.

Poindexter reportedly told police he never had a driver’s license, although he had a learner’s permit in New York several years ago.

Poindexter was arraigned Sunday before District Judge Robert Redlinger on charges including three counts of accidents involving injury while not properly licensed and one count each of aggravated assault by vehicle, in addition to several traffic violations. He was released from Washington County Jail later that day after posting a $5,000 percentage bond. He is scheduled for a Nov. 20 preliminary hearing before District Judge Joshua Kanalis.
