Suspect, officer wounded in shooting outside workplace
BERWICK (AP) – An officer was slightly wounded when police say he traded gunfire with a suspect who drove to his workplace and fired his gun at a co-worker in Pennsylvania.
The Berwick officer hasn’t been identified, but the suspect is 35-year-old James Calderone.
Police say he drove to the Berwick Industrial Development Association after a domestic dispute Monday afternoon, crashed his car, and opened fire. Columbia County District Attorney Thomas Leipold says Calderone reportedly said he hoped to die during the shootout.
Chief Kenneth Strish says one officer was hit with a piece of metal that ricocheted off a utility tower, but is “fine.”
Calderone was hit by several shots police fired in return, and is hospitalized.
The district attorney and state police are reviewing the shooting.
Calderone faces charges but none were immediately filed.
