Fire damages home in Rogersville
ROGERSVILLE – Fire damaged several rooms in a two-story, wood-frame house Tuesday night in Rogersville.
Center Township Volunteer Fire Company was called to the home of Tim Alger at 106 Second St. at about 7:30 p.m., fire Chief Charles Jones said. No one was home at the time of the fire.
When firefighters arrived on scene, flames were coming from two of the windows of the house, Jones said.
Firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze and limit the fire damage mainly to one room, the living room, where the fire is believed to have started, he said.
Two other rooms in the house received heat damage and other areas received water damage and other damage associated with fighting the blaze, he said.
Jones said he talked to Alger Wednesday and although Alger’s insurance company had not yet inspected the damage, Alger hoped to be able to repair the house.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation though it is believed to be accidental and electrical in nature, Jones said. Firefighters were on the scene for about three hours.
A neighbor, Mark McCurdy, said he was alerted to the fire by another neighbor, Dave Zaccagnini, who smelled smoke and called the fire company.
McCurdy said at first, all he and the neighbors saw was smoke coming from the house.
A “lick of flame” came from one of the windows, then an area under the front porch roof burst into flames, he said.
The fire company’s response was “remarkable,” McCurdy said.
“It took off pretty fast. In the space of time between when we saw the house on fire and they (the fire company) showed up was maybe three to five minutes,” he said.
McCurdy said he also was impressed with the coordination among the fire companies.
Center Township was assisted by fire companies from Waynesburg-Franklin, Morris, Graysville and Richhill townships. No one was injured fighting the fire.
“Things went smoothly, and we worked well together,” Jones said.
