Apartments eyed at Old Mill
Apartments and a dental center may be on the horizon for the Route 19 corridor in South Strabane Township.
The township zoning hearing board has scheduled public hearings for the two initiatives beginning at 7 p.m. Nov. 30 in the municipal building, 550 Washington Road.
According to a legal advertisement in Tuesday’s Observer-Reporter, HCB Foundry LLC has applied for a zoning interpretation in an effort to build mid-rise apartments in the Old Mill project.
Andy Boyd, senior asset manager for The Staenberg Group, the shopping center developer in charge of the 104-acre project, said he could not comment on the apartment proposal. “I don’t know if there’s a project unless we have a variance,” he said Tuesday. “It’s very, very preliminary.”
Across the road, variances are sought for wall signs for Aspen Dental at 360 Washington Road. Township Manager John Stickle said this is the site of the former Sharp’s Furniture store, which closed in August following a 98-year run. Sharp’s was in downtown Washington for 52 years before relocating to South Strabane in 1969.
Win Development of Belleair Beach, Fla., is developing the 3.59-acre property, which includes the Sharp’s building. “There will be a strip center with a couple of national tenants,” said Summer Ewing, managing partner of Win.
She said Tuesday her firm is finalizing its tenant list and plans to submit site plans in a few weeks.
Her father, Owen C. Ewing, is operations manager of MF Washington LLC, which bought the site for $2,650,000, according to the Washington County Recorder of Deeds office.
