Bomb threat forces middle school evacuation
A bomb threat found in the girls’ bathroom inside Margaret Bell Miller Middle School in Waynesburg prompted the building’s evacuation Tuesday afternoon, Central Greene Superintendent Brian Uplinger.
Uplinger said the threatening message was discovered about 2 p.m., prompting the district to take all students to nearby Waynesburg University’s football stadium to wait to be picked up by school buses or parents.
“Because of no specifications being made within the note, we decided to evacuate the building and move forward from that as soon as possible,” he said.
Parents were immediately alerted about the situation through an automated phone message system and through the district’s mobile phone app, Uplinger said. No students or teachers were injured during the evacuation.
All evening activities at the middle school were canceled, and students are not permitted to bring backpacks or large purses onto school grounds today.
Uplinger said a K-9 unit from Pittsburgh was called in to sweep the building before the doors were locked Tuesday night.
A similar incident occurred Oct. 28 at Waynesburg Central High School, where a message with specific threats was found in a girls’ bathroom.
The school followed the same procedures for the latest bomb threat, Uplinger said.
“We are once again investigating this to the fullest extent,” Uplinger said.
“When we find the perpetrator, I will press forward with all available policies and make it apparent that this cannot happen.”
