Philly officer suspended, charged in doughnut shop lot fight
PHILADELPHIA (AP) – A Philadelphia police officer has been suspended and charged with assault for allegedly attacking a doughnut shop employee who accidentally hit his car with a shopping cart.
Thirty-nine-year-old officer Joseph Marion was off-duty when the incident happened at a Dunkin’ Donuts on Feb. 14.
Police say a worker using the cart to spread rock salt lost control of it and the cart hit the officer’s personal vehicle.
Police say Marion got out and assaulted the worker, then did the same to a woman who tried to break it up.
Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey tells The Philadelphia Inquirer that Marion has been suspended for 30 days with the intention that he’ll be fired.
Online court records don’t list an attorney for Marion, who was charged Tuesday and faces a preliminary hearing Dec. 18.
