Fires destroy two Cecil homes
Firefighters in Cecil Township battled two fires within 10 hours Tuesday night and early Wednesday, blazes that destroyed both houses and caused two minor injuries.
Their night also was interrupted by a third alarm involving smoke that temporarily evacuated a hotel in Southpointe.
Lloyd Rumbaugh, age unknown, was in good condition Wednesday at UPMC- Mercy hospital, Pittsburgh, where he was taken following a fast-moving fire at 44 Coleman Road, a hospital spokeswoman said.
The 9 p.m. fire was apparently traced to food cooking in the kitchen while Rumbaugh was sleeping. He was alerted to the fire by his dog.
Meanwhile, Tiffaney Davis, 35, was treated at an area hospital as a precaution after she sustained smoke inhalation Wednesday during a 6:42 a.m. fire at her residence at 45 Davis Lane, Cecil fire Capt. Dennis Berty said.
Everyone else, including six children ranging in age from 3 to 14, escaped the fire unharmed at the house owned by Alan Davis, who also lived there. State police Fire Marshal Craig Soltis said he believed the fire was sparked by a wood pellet stove. However, Soltis said, he ruled the cause of the fire undetermined.
“There’s just too much damage,” he said outside the house along a private dirt road that was leveled by flames.
Firefighters were called to that fire two hours after being summoned to investigate smoke at Homewood Suites by Hilton at 300 Horizon Vue Drive, Berty said.
He said a small amount of smoke was created by a malfunction in a heating unit at the hotel, and that the evacuated guests were soon permitted to return to their rooms.
