Road construction started on a portion of Route 40 in Washington. Traffic was restricted to one lane Thursday.

Paving work began Thursday along Route 40 in the Washington area under a $2.2 million project that had been stalled for a month.

Valerie Petersen, spokeswoman for the state Department of Transportation, said the work was originally scheduled to begin in early September but was delayed because the contractor encountered difficulty in getting some of the road products shipped to the site.

“Most of the work is going to be at night,” Petersen said.

The nighttime work schedule, which begins Monday, is a result of the heavy traffic that Route 40 receives along the stretch of road in South Strabane Township and Washington.

”There is no good time to do it, but it has to be done,” Petersen said.

A. Folino Construction of Oakmont began milling work Thursday, and that process is expected to be completed Sunday, she said.

The company is scheduled to complete the work by Dec. 18, working Monday through Saturday.

Route 40 will be reduced to single lane travel between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m. between Chestnut Street and South Wade Avenue.

Traffic will be restored to normal flow in that area during the day.

Motorists will encounter single-lane restrictions between 6 a.m. and 3 p.m. between South Wade and Route 19 at Laboratory in South Strabane.
