WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. (AP) – New headstones have been installed on the graves of three Civil War veterans buried in West Liberty Cemetery.

The Intelligencer and Wheeling News-Register (http://bit.ly/1VyFcts ) reports that the headstones recently were placed on the graves of James A. Kelley, Joseph Verse and James Posey by the Ebenezer Zane chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution.

All three men served in the Union Army and returned to civilian life after the war. Kelley died in 1910, Verse died in 1885 and Posey died in 1892.

Kelley and Verse were African-Americans who served in the U.S. Colored Infantry. Posey, who was white, served in the 4th Cavalry Regiment, 64th Volunteers.

Cemetery trustee Earl Nicodemus says the West Liberty Historical Society raised money from donations to pay for the new headstones.
