The NAACP Washington Area Branch is conducting its annual membership campaign through Dec. 31.
Chartered in October 1917, the goal of the NAACP Washington Area Branch is to increase membership so it can continue to ensure political, educational, social, economic and criminal justice equality for all citizens.
The organization said in a news release, “While the NAACP has won many victories throughout history, the times ahead are critical. The glaring racial disparities in education, jobs, housing, health care, voting rights and the criminal justice system remind us that our job is not yet done.
“Our best hope for protecting the freedom of people and advancing the gains of the NAACP is to become a member, vowing to be more actice, more vocal and more visible within the association and our community. “
Locally, the NAACP Washington Branch is a sponsor of the annual Awards Day at Washington Park Intermediate School.
In January, the organization sponsored a free health insurance seminar.
In February, it participated in the LeMoyne Center Black History Program, and in September the NAACP was a partner in the first Washington Community Expo and Resource Fair.
Each year, the NAACP also holds its Dr. Martin Luther King Celebration and the Human Rights Award Banquet.
