A pregnant woman was transported to UPMC-Mercy hospital, Pittsburgh, after a one-vehicle accident in Smith Township at 2:50 p.m. Thursday.

According to Smith Township police Chief Bernie LaRue, Chelsea Stoothoff, 24, of Slovan, was traveling in the 1700 block of Smith Township State Road (Route 18) when she swerved her vehicle to avoid hitting a deer and struck a utility pole. Her vehicle flipped on its side, leaving Stoothoff trapped.

Route 18 was closed while crews freed Stoothoff from the wreckage. A guide wire from a telephone pole came down across the road.

LaRue said Stoothoff was in stable condition when she was transported by ambulance from the scene. Traffic reopened to both lanes at 4 p.m.

Slovan Volunteer Fire Department assisted at the scene.
